Slay the summer in style with these local brands

Summer never truly makes a graceful exit in the Philippines. As the days pass, the temperature rises and the need for apt clothing becomes inevitable.

Well, we’d like the pvblic to meet Amihan Swimwear, Lawud, and PLASTIC HONEYMOON – three trailblazing brands who are changing the game, one piece at a time. Feel yourself with the hottest (pun intended) summer collections straight from these proudly Filipino brands.

Amihan Swimwear

Founder: Celina Sol Cruz
When and how did your brand’s inception come about?

It was around 2014, when the beach life became my much-needed break from the city and the corporate life. I would frequent the beach and eventually gained interest to learn how to surf and that’s when I felt that there was a void in stylish, functional, and affordable swimwear.

What aspect of your brand stands out the most?

Before I even started Amihan Swimwear, I knew that I wasn’t going to create just another brand focused on selling. I wanted to build a brand with its own heart and that’s how the tagline “Every Bikini Has A Story” came about. Amihan Swimwear’s ultimate purpose is to celebrate the new wave of active, passionate and beautiful women and share their passion stories to inspire others.

This is why we name each design after a woman, give her a platform to tell her story and hopefully, through this, inspirit other women as well.

What is the inspiration behind your brand’s summer collection?

I wanted to create timeless pieces and do a crossover with the colors of the summer. Our summer collection is meant to be playful, stylish and functional.

Which piece is the crowd favorite?

Everyone’s favorite would be the Lexi suit! It’s a one-piece suit that can be worn in 3 ways– tube suit, noodle strap, and off-shoulder ribbon tie. This piece is designed to be the the go-to piece for your summer trips— having 2 different sets of detachable straps, the Lexi suit, can be worn any way you want.

Lawud

Founders: Simon Gonzaga, Grayson Yáñez
When and how did your brand’s inception come about?

Lawud was officially launched just June of last year (2017). And we, the founders, just first met a few months before that. But we instantly clicked, especially because we both love to travel, spend days on the beach, and we both happen to love wearing floral/tropical print polos! We wished there were nice options here locally that are also affordable. So we thought of making our own. We really wanted to create and start wearing more often clothing that reminds us of the easiness of the tropics, the rawness of nature, and the freedom of the road — wherever we may be. That’s what Lawud stands for.

What aspect of your brand stands out the most?

I think we’ve been gaining a lot of support because we deliver what we promise, both from a product and a brand standpoint. When we say it’s easy, the fabrics we use are really soft and flowy. When we say nature-inspired, we offer vibrant and organic-looking prints. And when we say freedom of the road, everything we do is inspired by our passion for exploring. We also wanted to refresh the image of the “Tito look” or the “Mayor Lito Atienza shirt” not because there is anything wrong with it but precisely because it can be really cool to wear!

What is the inspiration behind your brand’s summer collection?

We’d like to say every day is summer for us. Every collection we have draws from the same inspiration of the sun, the flowers and foliage, nature, the tropics, the ocean (fun fact: Lawud means “open sea” in Bisaya). We don’t want to be a shirt you just use when on the beach, but we want people to wear Lawud to take the beach with them wherever, whenever. But particularly for this summer, our prints are a mix of everything fun, fresh, and floral.

Which piece is the crowd favorite?

The Lemons print is already almost sold-out! We think people like how fresh it looks and quirky at the same time—definitely a print you’d wanna rock and have fun with in this season we all love.

PLASTIC HONEYMOON

Founders: Michael Dayao, Bernard Guiamoy
When and how did your brand’s inception come about?

Plastic Honeymoon is the brainchild of two guys and latter a third, all from completely different cultural backgrounds. Our connection and influence from music and art is what ultimately linked us together. This brand is a representation of how big of an impact common interests can bring people from completely different sides of the earth closer together. So we’ve come to a point where we wanted to make our mark in the streetwear community, through seeing something so great, slowly losing sight of what once was.

We did research and refinement for almost two years now to lay down the foundation we wanted for Plastic Honeymoon. Keeping it true to us at its very core and not giving attention to what’s going on around us is our mindset in designing every piece we make… with love. Throughout the brand’s process, we learned to never be close-minded about the possibilities; especially during its manufacturing stages. We also set our goal to create quality pieces for a fair price. Trust us when we say you won’t be disappointed with what you paid for.

We want to use this platform to bridge together what made this culture so great for us as individuals, in hopes to educate those who are newly introduced to this latter part of the culture in the best way we can and share what it is that made it so special for those of us that have been a part of it for a while now.

What aspect of your brand stands out the most?

The aspect of the brand that stands out the most is in the core of its branding. The designs we make are what reflects the current state of streetwear that, in our eyes, disagrees with the culture today. Some people use streetwear as a meal ticket to being “cool” and being “in”, but sometimes they’re in it so badly that they don’t realize that they’re slowly being controlled by the hype – adopting the aura of being imprisoned inside and ultimately consumed by what others think of as “cool”; losing a sense of individuality.

From being a genre in the market that was once considered as ghetto and shunned by the industry, streetwear has recently had its introduction to high fashion, glamour, and runways. Plastic Honeymoon is the understanding that this culture was not built only by hype, but by the sense of individuality to stand out from society.

What is the inspiration behind your brand’s summer collection?

The summer collection is broken up into capsules where the graphics are not defined by its season, but through our choices of colors and pieces. We were able to approach it in a manner where it’s timeless and true to our identity. Our graphics are inspired by those who may be confused about the culture and what current society’s misconceptions think about what the scene is all about.

Our summer releases consist of colors and graphics influenced in its core by 70s psychedelic and 80s punk graphics.

Which piece is the crowd favorite?

Based on sales, our crowd favorite pieces are our black “STACKS” tee and our upcoming unreleased tote bags, as they’re nearly sold out by pre-orders alone.
